As a former educator, Ginny is very sensitive to the needs
of teachers and students and is uniquely interested in preparing Florida’s young people
for post-secondary educational careers.
She is also a supporter of creating additional opportunities for
continuing
education for adults.
Ginny believes that it is a duty of the government to
provide top quality education to all students, regardless of their
socioeconomic background. All levels of
government must commit to the improvement of our school system. This will require an aggressive and
innovative approach.
Soon, Congress will consider reauthorization of the No Child
Left Behind Act (NCLB). Since this
legislation became law in 2002, NCLB has had a deep impact on the lives of
students and teachers, and Ginny is committed to working with teachers,
administrators, and parents to ensure the law accurately addresses the
challenges facing our schools. Ginny
remains focused on ensuring that assessments of school performance
are fair and
used effectively to improve instruction.
Additionally, Ginny is working to meet the needs of our hard
working teachers. In order for schools
to be successful, classrooms must be headed by well-trained and enthusiastic
teachers. Recruitment will become more
difficult as the demand for qualified teachers continues to increase to
accom
modate class size reductions and quality improvement. To that end, Ginny has consistently supported
measures to increase the student loan forgiveness limit for teachers in
mathematics, science, and special education from $5,000 to $17,500. Teachers must have the ability and the
incentive to obtain the skills they need to effectively teach our children.
During these uncertain times, when multiple priorities are
competing for federal funds, education cannot be sacrificed. Ginny will continue to fight for school
funding, and support legislation that ensures our school districts have all the
tools they need to succeed.
